But the thing is, the ego has this destructive side to it, one which is currently threatening our very existence. There are a lot books banging on about how terrible the ego is. We now know enough about human nature and our collective psychosis to know that the responsible thing is to allow the ego to subside. But we can only do this because the ego has been fully explained and fully defended. It is now time for the ego to subside.

My boyfriend is so egocentric it is embarrassing. He came with me to a work function last night and honestly I felt like crawling under the table and staying there until the party was over. And what made it worse was a lot of the woman fell for his fake flattery and most of the men took up his ego challenge and joined in the sad game of ego stroking. I introduced him to my boss and he didn’t even stop to ask my boss a question he just let fly into a detailed biography of his life and how much he had achieved and how successful he was. The last straw was when my boss offered my boyfriend a job. I couldn’t believe it so there was only one thing left for me to do – resign from my job and resign from my boyfriend.

When I am in my garden and surrounded by all of nature’s beauty I am so completely happy and content that in all my years, and I am now 89, that is what has become the meaning of life for me. I am up early every morning just before sun rise so I can sit on my bench with a hot cup of tea in my hand and watch in amazement as my garden comes to life. As the light brightens some birds start softly calling to each other and then the cobwebs become visible and all the spiders busy work is revealed. As the morning fully breaks more birds awake and then it becomes very busy with birds and bees and others starting their day with great enthusiasm. That is the best time to see the flowers and the colours and to smell the freshness of the day ahead. It is like being surrounded by the promise of a beautiful world and that is why I think nature’s beauty is the meaning in life.
